Date Range1975 - presentDescriptionTe Wiki o Te Reo Māori/Māori Language Week is a government initiative that has been running annually in Aotearoa/New Zealand since 1975. The initiative is to encourage New Zealanders to use more Te Reo and integrate the culture in their everyday lives. Since 1987 Te Reo Māori has been an official language of Aotearoa/New Zealand.
The event originated after a petition was presented to parliament to teach Te Reo in schools on 14th of September 1972. This petition resulted in a Māori language day being created which in 1975 developed into Māori language week. The petition was originally part of the Māori protest movement in which 3 groups, Victoria University’s Te Reo Māori Society, Te Huinga Rangatahi and Ngā Tamatoa whom petitioned to the government with over 30,000 signatures.
Wellington City Council celebrates Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori with events, festivals, exhibitions, and activities. The festival is part of The Tūpiki Ora Māori strategy, which is a partnership between Mana Whenua and Wellington City Council. The strategy is to provide a better future for our mokopuna, improve well-being, and share a commitment to support Te Ao Māori.
