WCC, Small works building permit applications
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00040Date Range1989-1993DescriptionThis series consists of applications for small works building permits made to the Wellington City Council between 1989-1993. To meet the criteria of a small work the application had to cost less than $5,000, be less than 10 square metres or not involve any plumbing or drainage work. This generally included work such as fireplaces, repiling, and small structures such as decking or conservatories. Under the Wellington City Council Building Bylaws written application had to be to the Council for permission to erect a building or carry out additions or alterations to an existing building. Applicants had to submit plans and documentation of the work proposed. If the work was in accordance with the city bylaw a permit was issued and the plans and documentation were held in the office of the City Engineer. All documentation relating to each application was filed by a unique permit number. Documentation generally includes an application form, plan, and written specifications of the proposed work. The application form recorded details such as the applicant or builder, the owner, description of the work proposed, legal description and street the site is on, and an estimated value. Plans submitted depend on the nature of the work being applied for, but generally can include a site plan, floor plan, elevations and sections, and where necessary structural details. The written specifications outline what materials were used and the work done by the tradesmen involved. In general with repiling no plan was submitted, but a written specification provides detail of the work carried out. This series starts at number E681349; earlier applications were filed and numbered as part of Series 00059 (Building Permit Applications, D/E Series). From 1986 all applications to Council for work on a property received a unique application number, but linked to this separate permit numbers were still used to manage building, plumbing and drainage permits. Small works had their own unique application number, but as they only consisted of building work they were filed under their building permit application number. In 1989 the system was changed so the application number assigned covered all work being done; separate building, plumbing and drainage numbers were no longer used. From this point the small works application number was also used as the unique reference number for small works permits. In 1993 the Building Act 1991 came into force, and the building permit system was superseded by the issuing of building consents (Series 00060).Quantity (Linear Metres)4MediumFileSystem of ArrangementNumerical by building permit application number, applications in date order.
