WCC, Legal and Property files
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00064Date Range1906-2004DescriptionThis series consists of the filing system of the Legal and Property Management Department. The Legal and Property Management Department was established in 1989 as an amalgamation of the City Solicitor’s and the City Valuer’s Departments. Continuing the functions of its predecessor agencies, the Legal and Property Department dealt with all the legal work for the Council and carried out all the valuation work and property administration in which the Council was involved. In addition to its legal and property functions the department also oversaw the Economic and Business Development Unit (EBDU), an agency responsible for promoting employment, business growth and economic development in Wellington City (note: in 1992 the EBDU merged with City Promotions and Marketing to form the Capital Development Agency).
Subjects covered in the files include: legal advice and opinions offered by the department, case files for litigation involving Council, bylaw drafting and enactment, legal issues related to high level Council projects, Town and Country Planning Act appeals and District Scheme Change files, Council Commercial operations and Local Authority Trading Enterprises e.g. Wellington Airport, MED, Capital Dairy Products, lease files for Council property, files related to the acquisition, disposal or subdivision of land and other land rights issues. Many of the files were transferred from predecessor series and renumbered: the legal files from the City Solicitors and property files from the City Valuer's files; which were a subset of the Town Clerk’s files.
