Archives Identifier00154Date RangeCirca 1890DescriptionThis series contains original photographs of Mayors and Councillors, circa 1890, which appear to have been collected for a particular purpose around the 1890s.

The majority are cabinet photographs, which are card photographs on mounts measuring 4 1/4 by 6 1/2 inches. There are also three cartes de visites, which are card photographs on mounts measuring about 4 by 2 1/2 inches. (These were primarily used for portraits and functioned as visiting cards, flourishing from the 1860s to the 1880s.). There are also three original prints and one photograph mounted on a greetings card. Some have been identified from notes on the back of the mount card or from publications, like the Cyclopedia of New Zealand. Some of the images are reproduced in this publication and the text provides further biographical information about the individuals.
