Archives Identifier00196Date Range1903-1919DescriptionAt the beginning of their terms of office the Mayor and Councillors meet and decide on the number and status of committees to be set up. The Mayor is an ex officio member of all committees, with a small number of councillors making up the rest of each committee. The Town Clerk, or later the Clerk of Committees, is responsible for taking minutes and ensuring that they are written into the minute book, signed, and indexed. Committees set the direction of work of Council departments, make decisions within their delegated authority, and refer to the full Council any decisions for which they do not have delegated authority. The minutes of Standing Committees are public documents, unless the committee has formally gone into closed session. The minutes of one off or ad hoc committees are not necessarily public. This committee dealt with libraries [which included the museum, school library services and some staff matters], public swimming baths and city beaches. The series includes one change of committee name and subject matter: Libraries Committee 1903-1914 Baths Libraries and Beaches Committee 1914-1919 Volumes may include reports, newspaper cuttings, maps and plans as well as minutes. Notes: Baths and beaches were dealt with in 00174 for the periods: 1903-1914 and 1919-1965 which makes the same series both a predecessor and a successor to the present series.Quantity (Linear Metres)0.22MediumBound VolumeSystem of ArrangementMinutes are arranged in meeting date order and indexed by subject matter.Collection TypeWellington City Council
