WCC, All Cemeteries, Purchase Registers
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00227Date Range1892-1989DescriptionBurial plots, niches, plaques and vases for disposal of cremated remains were all sold. If the would-be purchaser could not afford to pay the complete purchase price in one payment it was possible to pay on the instalment plan, sometimes over a period of years. In some cases [particularly burial plots] only the initial purchase instalment was paid and bodies could be disinterred when the plot was resold.
Details included in the registers were date of purchase, name of purchaser, address, grave location and depth, amount paid, name of person buried and information about deeds.
Registers of purchased ground are arranged alphabetically by first letter of surname of purchaser. Registers of part payment for purchase of burial plots at Karori Cemetery are arranged both in date order of initial payment and in alphabetical order. The register of niche payments in is alphabetical order of first letter of surname of purchaser.
Where the purchaser was a relative, the purchase registers could provide useful information for genealogical researchers. Unfortunately, no cross indexing of the purchaser and deceased's names has been carried out. Because plots and niches could be purchased long before they were needed, it is not always possible to identify purchase details from the date of burial. Purchase details are occasionally recorded on the burial and cremation registers, allowing some follow-up to take place.Quantity (Linear Metres)3.5MediumBound VolumeCollection TypeWellington City Council
