The development of the Urban Motorway into Wellington in the 1960s created major changes at the Bolton and Sydney Street Cemetery. Material in this series relates to the process of identification and disinterment of human remains and identifies known burials which were disturbed. Some material was created by the Wellington City Council [Design Branch and Cemetery] and some originated with the Ministry of Works but is kept here as an aid to researchers. The series includes the following: Authorisation forms nominating options for disposal of remains from graves in Sydney and Bolton Streets cemetery disturbed by motorway. Information includes name, address and telephone number of person responsible, location of grave and option chosen, letters from descendants and occasional photograph of headstones. Note: Much of this material relates to TC file 00001, 7/202, and forms and letters from former TC Bins (Town Clerk's miscellaneous) have been integrated with Sexton papers to create one complete set of information. Diary kept by H Johnson noting daily statistics of disinterments, reinterments, cremations, provision of new caskets, ashes, site activity and graves opened, in date order.
