WCC, Milk Department Manager's letter books of outwards correspondence
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00321Date Range1918-1922DescriptionThis series consists of four bound volumes of copies of outwards letters, in the main from the Milk Department Manager concerning the setting up and early management of the Milk Station which opened in January 1919. From 25 September 1918 until he took ill in April 1922, letters are signed by Henry A Ward, the first General Manager, then by various other officers until the appointment of R A Herron in June 1922.
The last letter book ceases soon after on 20 July 1922, leaving blank pages after p. 478. From 16 August 1920 reports to the Milk Committee were collated into another volume, see Series 00322.
There is probably one volume missing, as there is a gap between the end of v.2, August 1920, and the start of v. 3, July 1921. Volumes 3 and 4 overlap in dates; Manager H A Ward was on overseas trip in America, Nov 1921- Mar 1922, and v. 3 letters up to April 1922 are signed by the Engineer and Acting Manager, etc. It appears Ward began a new book on his return on 15 March 1922.
The letters record the setting up of the Milk Station, including reports to the Milk Committee, negotiations with the Railways and transport firms about delivery, with the local vendors' association, the Rahui Dairy Factory Co., farmers' co-operatives, and others over milk supplies and prices, and with contractors overseas and in New Zealand for engineering services and the purchase of mechanical equipment and bottles. Also discussed is the Milk Station building in Dixon Street, at first known as the Milk Clearing Station.
The indexes cover names of persons and companies, and the first two volumes have separate index sections for the reports to the Milk Committee, later in a separate volume, series 00322.Quantity (Linear Metres)0.33MediumBound VolumeSystem of ArrangementChronological by date of outwards letterCollection TypeWellington City Council
