Archives Identifier00335Date Range1892-1987DescriptionThis series of 21 indexes provides access by street name to the Building Permits (series 00043, 00048-58) and Building permits registers Series 00334. The indexes continued to be created up until 1987 though the card system established in 1922 serves the same purpose. The indexes are accessible by street name only. The street entries are not in alphabetical order and each volume has at the back or front an alphabetical list of street names with relevant page numbers. There are two OC (Old City) volumes, one for 'A' registrations, seven 'B' series volumes, and six covering 'C' and 'D' registrations. They numbered some volumes starting with the 'B' series, 1 to 7 and also 11 and 13. Some of the indexes to the registers of former boroughs or parts of them are separate volumes - Wadestown, Northland and Melrose. There are two Melrose indexes: the first up to 1912 only; this is superceded by the other that copies of all entries in the first volume and continues up to Feb. 1922. The Karori and Onslow registers have indexes at the back of the volumes - A photocopy of the Karori index is placed with the other borough indexes. The Onslow register index divides the area in broad regions only (Ngaio, Kaiwarra [Kaiwharawhara]), not by streets. There is no street index to the Miramar register. These registers are used only infrequently as details about permits held at the Archives are now available on the Collection database.
