Wellington Borough Council Burgess Roll and election results
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00338Date Range1842-1843DescriptionThis volume contains several documents relating to the elections for the Wellington Borough Council in 1842 and 1843.
For the 1842 election there were 59 candidates (any one could name a candidate). Voters were each allowed eighteen votes, but most voted for only 12 or less. There are two Burgess Rolls, 1842, hand written in number order, and 1843, a printed sheet in alphabetical order , with significantly less entries than the 1842 roll. There are two additional copies of this sheet in a pocket inside the front cover.
The 1842 Roll column heading are:
- No. (on roll),
- Date of Registry,
- Name,
- (Residence, Occupation or Calling and
- £ s. d. (amount paid).
It ends with a total amount, signed (illegible) and dated 31 August 1942 The 1843 printed sheet includes only name, residence and occupation.
Further information and full versions of the rolls and the voting results are printed in 'The Birth of a city, Wellington, 1840-1843' by A H Carman, Appendices C, D and J. This published version 1842 roll differs in content from the original; some names and occupations are different, and there is additional information on the date of arrival and name of immigrant ship.
The top portion of the first page is missing. It appears from newspaper statements that the 1842 roll was also printed. The other document (bound in front of the Burgess rolls) is the record of voting results for the 1842 elections. This is a printed form, with voter information printed down the page - name (printed alphabetically by last name), residence and occupation - and with names of the candidates entered by hand across two pages. Vote totals for each candidate were carried forward and calculated at the bottom of each printed page. Only the top portion of the final page has survived.
It is presumed that Carman took his information re the missing sections of the 1842 Roll from a preliminary printed version published in the 'N Z Gazette and Wellington Spectator on 30th of August.Quantity (Linear Metres)1MediumBound VolumeSystem of ArrangementFirst section: election results 1842 - in alphabetical order by name of voter, spread over two pages.
