Archives Identifier00363Date Range1888-1903DescriptionThese five letter books contain copies of outwards letters from the Melrose Borough Town Clerk from 29 March 1888 when Melrose Borough was established from wards 2-5 of the Kilbirnie Highway Board, until Mar 1903 when Melrose amalgamated with Wellington City. As well as letters from the Town Clerk, W G Foster, there are occasionally letters from the Mayor, George Frost (Sept 1900), and from Foster signing himself as Treasurer. The letters are sent to central government and local officials, especially Wellington CIty, and to contractors, businesses and ratepayers. They cover all borough matters, financial, engineering, property. transport, etc. There are copies not only of letters but also copies of the 6 monthly balance sheet (1888), copies of advertisments (Sept 1900), election notices (May 1902), charitable aid statistics (January 1903) etc. At the end of the letters in the last volume, there are some additional letters (1 May and 8 July) and notes up to July 1903. The notes are detailed inventories of documents handed over to the Wellington Council and Engineer including Certificates of title, bonds, contracts, deeds, agreements, maps, plans and building permits.
