Archives Identifier00371Date Range1923-1939DescriptionThis volume registers information about a variety of commercial activities for which the Council charged license fees, as laid down in the bylaws. For example, Bylaw No. 1, 1908, Clause 10 - General provisions as to licenses, states: '(c) Every such license shall be registered in a book to be kept by the Town Clerk in the appointed form.'

The register consists of sections with printed headings separated by a blank sheet. Not all the section have entries and the dates covered vary. The headed sections include:

- Auctioneer (p.1-2 1931),
- Billard room (p. 11-17 1923-38),
- Billiard room attendant (p. 37-42 1923-37),
- Hawkers (no entries),
- Hoarding (p. 89-108,112-20 1925-36),
- Meat vendors (p. 109-111 1923-25),
- Public halls (p.133-61 1923-39),
- Pawnbroker and Secondhand dealers (no entries - used for public halls.)

The descriptive elements for entries include: the number of the license, name, address, situation (of room, hall, etc.), the license fee, the dates covered, and when it was paid. Hoarding entries also recorded the size of the signboard. Public hall entries recorded the purpose for which it was used (dances, theatricals, 'kinema', moving pictures, etc.) and the 'number of persons for which accommodation is provided'.

There are a number of letters, notes, etc. either inserted or pinned onto pages; these have been removed and placed in acid-free paper folder with the index folder. They include: a memo, 6 Jan 1933 to Mr Aked re inspecting theatres and certified firemen at theatres; lists of public hall, billiard room and billiard room attendants' licenses for 1936-37; notes, March 1937, on hoarding fees; a memo, Town Clerk to the Mayor, 16 May 1939, terminating Mr Tubert's Winter Show building skating rink license.
