WCC, City Solicitor's Department litigation files
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00446Date Range1910-1946?DescriptionThese are Solicitor's files containing documents of (mostly Supreme) Court cases involving the Wellington City Corporation; they can contain briefs, evidence (typed versions and court notebooks), witness interview notes, defence statements, copies of judgements, correspondence (sometimes copies from earlier files), jury lists, plans, etc. The original folders often had multiple carbon copies (progressively fainter and less legible) of each document- these have been removed. Nearly all of the folders are headed with a number - probably referring to a 'Brief' numbering system. Many of the folders also have a reference to legal office files, e. g. 1943/128, but only 1-2 of these have been located. A few folders do not appear to relate to any court case but to meetings attended by O'Shea - e.g. No. 214 relates to a conference in 1919 of Wellington region local government officials re improvements to Upper Hutt and Rimutaka Hill roads. The cases relate to disputes with contractors, employee dismissals, accidents, land and property claims for compensation, etc. The evidence statements provide a view of Council work and operations from a personal viewpoint not often encountered in the general administration documents; the court statements of evidence very often begin with a short career history of the Council officers; The Wellington Hospital Inquiry and land lease cases give important information about Council land holdings.Quantity (Linear Metres)0.75MediumFileSystem of ArrangementIn rough chronological order, by Brief no.Collection TypeWellington City Council
