Archives Identifier00502Date Range1892-1932DescriptionThe records in this series relate to electricity connections that were cancelled due to building demolition, subdivision or conversions. It appears from the relevant building records that these papers relate to demolitions and conversions carried out in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The records were arranged into annual folders at that time. Except in a few cases,only the original application form was retained during the reprocessing. The records of the New Zealand Electrical Syndicate (NZES) (1892-1903) and the City of Wellington Electric Light and Power Company (1904-July 1907) were taken over by the Electricity Department when the City Corporation bought the company in August 1907. The Wellington Electric Lighting Act from 1891 had allowed the New Zealand Electrical Syndicate to supply electricity to the citizens of the city. Prior to this there was no systematic electrical supply for private citizens of Wellington. There are only two 1892 application forms held, and it is recorded that these are the first two applications issued for private, domestic power. The earlier forms are very fragile; many had been repaired previously with sticky tape and with pasted paper. The 1892 items have had conservation treatment.
