They were probably collated into this form by Walter Cook, one of the authors, after the release of the publication 'Wellington Botanic Garden 1840-1987, in 1988. Notations indicate that a proportion of the papers were created in 1982 by Judith Murphy who was employed as an historical researcher in preparation for the Garden's centenary in 1991. Walter Cook was contracted later to research and to write the history from 1891 when the Council took over control of the garden. This became the second part of the published book.
