The first issue was produced in November 1959, by Thompson and Kitching Ltd, on contract to the PRO. The PRO took over production of magazine from August 1960.

Publication of the Guide was 'temporarily suspended' in November 1978, as 'the field is served adequately by the weekly newspaper Capital Visitor'. Capital Visitor was produced by Unit Two Newspapers.
