The material was sourced from the Transport Department’s own records as well as outside organisations and members of the public. The photographs show the various buses that were used by the Department from its beginnings as the Tramways Department in the 1900s through to ‘the present day’ in 1987.

The photographs are a mix of original and copy prints. Prints that were originally sourced from the Alexander Turnbull Library and the Dominion newspaper were not transferred due to potential copyright issues. There are also several ephemeral items in the collection, such as a Horse Tram Car ticket and a Visitors’ Guide for people who came to Wellington to see the Centennial Exhibition.

Each item was given a number in blue pencil from 1 to 80. This may relate to the position of images in the book. This numbering sequence has been noted in the Other ID field of the database and a new numbering sequence has been imposed by Wellington City Archives for ease of access and use.

While many of the photographs in this series are from Council sources, some are from external organisations such as NZ Railways and members of the public.
