Descriptive Data
Archives IdentifierAA001Date Range1841-1842DescriptionThis series contains letters which were originally in the possession of James Marsh of West Bromwich, England.
The first letter, dated 1841, is from James Marsh to Chauncey Townsend, an early Wellington settler, and the other is from Chauncey Townsend to James Marsh, dated 1842.
The letter from Marsh to Townsend appears to have been returned to the sender (Marsh) as the dead letter advice is included. Marsh's letter is apparently written the day Townsend left for New Zealand (1st January, 1841) and expresses friendship, best wishes and conveys news of friends. Townsend's letter describes meeting his future wife, his life in early Wellington, the Wellington environment, Maori and events. He also encourages his friend to come to Wellington.Quantity (Linear Metres)0.1MediumFileCollection TypeCommunity archives
