Wellington Harbour Board Aerial Contact Prints, 1968
Descriptive Data
Archives IdentifierAC108Date Range1968DescriptionThis series comprises aerial photographs covering parts of Wellington Harbour where the Wellington Harbour Board (WHB) owned land or ran facilities. The prints were commissioned in 1968 and produced by New Zealand Aerial Mapping, who had approached the WHB in 1967 proposing to produce a set of 40 foot to an inch scale aerial maps. This series consists of the contact prints created by NZ Aerial Mapping; it is unknown whether the 40 foot to an inch maps were ever produced. No correspondence has been found to confirm why the Harbour Board purchased them, but a letter from NZ Aerial Mapping notes that the aerials “provide in minute detail an up to date record of development as well as giving a reliable base for future planning”. It is assumed the Harbour Board purchased them for this purpose. The prints are at a scale of 240 feet to an inch, equivalent to 1:3,000. Each individual print is indexed using an alpha numeric code created by NZ Aerial Mapping. Each letter represents a different flyover and the number represents each photo taken during that particular run. Streets and harbour facilities (such as wharves) shown on each print have been noted to help with research New Zealand Aerial Mapping retained copyright for the prints, so customers can take copies but need their permission if they wish to reproduce them.Quantity (Linear Metres)0.11MediumPhotographSystem of ArrangementBy sheet numberCollection TypeWellington Museums Trust
