Wellington Harbour Board Members Albums
Descriptive Data
Archives IdentifierAC127Date RangeCirca 1880-1989DescriptionThis series is a collection of photographs depicting Members and Executive Officers of the Wellington Harbour Board. Not all Members are shown in the albums and some photographs depict senior staff members who did not serve on the Board. Most photographs are of individuals but there are some group shots.
The last 10 photographs in Album 4 are from the final meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board.
Albums 1-3 have notes accompanying the prints, detailing the position held by the person, the years they served on the Board, and how they were elected. In some cases dates of retirement or death are given. This information has been recorded in the Notes field in Vernon. There are indexes pasted into the front of Albums 1 and 2. These were created in 1921, probably by Francis William Ward, a Clerk in the Head Office Department. By comparing changes in handwriting it seems that the creation of Album 1 may predate its index by 20-30 years.
There are photographs of all of the original Board Members, meaning some of the prints date to the 1880s-1890s. In Albums 1-3 entries were updated when members were re-elected, resigned or died; so for example William Booth has an initial notation indicating date of election to the Board and re-election dates up to 1891, with a later addition in different handwriting indicating death in 1903. Album 2 seems to have been created circa 1900, again based on changes in handwriting. Initial entries in Album 3 match Francis William Ward’s handwriting, so the album probably begins in the 1920s. Album 4 seems to begin in the late 1940s-early 1950s; B E Keiller, the first entry in the album, was a member from 1947.
In summary the broad date ranges for creation of the albums are: Album 1: Circa 1880-1900 Album 2: Circa 1900-1923 Album 3: Circa 1923-1956 Album 4: Circa 1956-1989 Individual photographs have been assigned one of two date types. Where a specific date was noted down this was used. Where an individual’s career with the Board was listed the photograph was given a date range beginning with the date of election to the Board and ending with the date service/tenure ceased. As with other WHB photographic material no documentation has been found indicating exactly why the albums were created. Correspondence in AC023 indicates that WHB used and collected photographic material for historical, reference and publicity purposes [AC023:194:9].Quantity (Linear Metres)0.6MediumPhotographSystem of ArrangementBy volume numberCollection TypeWellington Museums Trust
