It appears that the files were first collated for those still working about 1939-1940, some using employment cards [Series AF011], sheets from earlier registers [Series AF009] and other documents.

They include correspondence, application forms, medical test results, testimonials and curriculum vitae, previous service, records of leave, promotions and qualifications, confidential reports on performance and conduct, and employment cards. Sometimes the forms record personal information such as date and place of birth, height, weight, chest and waist, marital status, and the correspondence covers immigration issues.
