Archives IdentifierAF026Date RangeCirca 1890-1914DescriptionThese registers include information dating back to 1875. They record employment information about providore staff - stewards/ stewardesses, laundresses and catering staff, including cadets to these departments.
The first two volumes are missing. Stewardesses are listed in separate sections a the back of v. 4 and v. 6.
The first volumes held (v. 3 and 4) are cumulative - when the new register was created, names of those employed at that time were transferred into the new volume, and new information on existing staff and entries for new employees added.
In v. 4 there are page number references to entries in v. 3. From v. 5 (approximately 1900) new appointees only or those rejoining were entered.
It appears that from about 1906 a card system of filing (Series AF028) was being created as well as the register. There are references on some cards to a relevant page number in the registers; in Register v. 7 there are references ( 'Card' ) beside those who have cards in Series AF028. Volumes record date of first joining, age, antecedents (former employment), position (steward, stewardess, laundress, cook, baker, waiter, scullion, bugler) with description (forecabin, bedroom, boots, etc.), name of ship, dates of service, and reasons for leaving. The latter volumes record the port where they departed. Not all entries contain the full range of information.Quantity (Linear Metres)1.5MediumBound VolumeSystem of ArrangementChronological by volume; v. 3-6 listings vary in arrangement: indexes at front; stewardess and temporary appointments listings at back of volume; v. 6-7 are alphabetically tabbed volumes.Collection TypeWellington Museums Trust
