Ships boxes, Named vessels
Descriptive Data
Archives IdentifierAF092Date Range1875-Circa 1980DescriptionThese records were received from the Museums Trust as part of the Museum of Wellington City and Sea Transfer. Research has identified that these USSCo records first passed to the NZ Ship and Marine Society, many of these members were USSCo employees. The collection appears to have then passed to the Wellington Maritime Museum when it was being formed in order for them to retain. Jack Churchouse, who arranged the records into their current state, is linked to both the USSCo and the Museum, hence must have had knowledge of the Company and the records he was arranging.
The series is arranged by ship and contains material that was taken from various parts of the Union Steamship Company (USSCo) records, including: classified and unnumbered files, forms, accidents files, survey cards, specifications, etc. Since being transferred to City Archives the items have been listed and a numbering system imposed. They are arranged largely in alphabetical order by ship name.
Ships change names, so two different names in this series may refer to the same ship (e.g. Aotearoa and Avenger). If they were already boxed together that arrangement has been maintained and the two names have been separated with a back slash e.g. Aotearoa / Avenger. The series may contain more than one ship with the same name (e.g. Wahine). If the separation between the two ships is obvious, the separation has been retained, and when possible the ships have been distinguished by using a number in square brackets. The ship that was built first should be ship number 1 e.g. Kaimanawa [1]; Kaimanawa [2]. When material for more than one ship is interspersed, the name of each ship will be included in the title using the following naming conventions: E.g. Dartford, Gladbrook and Ilma.Quantity (Linear Metres)99.75MediumFileSystem of ArrangementThe original system of arrangement is not known, as they series consists of records from across the operation of the USSCo, grouped together and arranged by ship. Individual items or files, as well as documents or correspondence from with items or files, has been brought together and arranged like this. We have retained this structure.Collection TypeWellington Museums Trust
