Archives IdentifierAM004Date RangeCirca 1868- Circa 1898DescriptionFour volumes of photographs which were shop stock-books in the Dunedin studios of the Burton Brothers. This photographic firm operated under the direction of the brothers between 1867 and 1896, during which time thousands of urban and rural landscapes were photographed, in addition to normal studio portrait work. Alfred Burton's visits to Wellington over a period of nearly twenty years produced 250 such photographs.
In 1982 the Wellington Public Library transferred the albums to the National Museum. A memo dated 31 May 1982 recommended 'that four Burton Brothers albums (shop stock-books from Dunedin studios) be transferred to National Museum on indefinite loan - the Museum shall supply a reference set of all Wellington scenes from Burton Collection - Museum shall undertake photographic printing and production of copy negatives at cost of materials.'
In 2007 these were returned to Wellington City Council from Te Papa after it was identified that they had been loaned from Wellington Public Library to the National Museum.Quantity (Linear Metres)2MediumPhotographCollection TypeWellington City Council
