Sue Piper, Wellington City Council papers
Descriptive Data
Archives IdentifierBK001Date Range1995-2006DescriptionThis collection is Sue Piper’s political papers during her nine years as a Wellington city councilor between 1995 and 2004. The arrangement of the papers follows that of the files Sue Piper retained. The papers are arranged roughly in chronological order although there is some cross-over between their different parts. They are divided into five parts.
The first part is the 'Piper for Council' campaign files which include campaign committee notes, campaign plans, publicity material, fundraising and financial records. There are files for each of the four Wellington City Council elections that Sue Piper contested: 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2004. There is a good collection of pamphlets distributed by other candidates for council and the mayoralty.
The second part of the papers includes newspaper clippings, leaflets and media releases between 1996 and 2001. There is good coverage of the 1998 council election when Mayor Mark Blumsky tried to get a council majority with his “Wellington Alive” ticket.
The third part of the papers covers several controversies during the 1998-2001 triennium. The outcome of the 1998 election was that no group had a majority and there was a lot of manoeuvring between councillors about leadership positions. File 3/18 covers the agreement between the Labour councillors and the Wellington Alive councillors on 30 October 1998. The three Labour councillors agreed to support Kerry Prendergast for deputy mayor. In return they won support on a number of policies, particularly taking the sale of council housing off the council’s agenda and purchasing the Owhiro Bay quarry. The agreement was controversial, particularly within the Labour Party. Other files in this part of the papers include letters and emails criticising the Labour councillors for making this agreement, minutes and correspondence of the Wellington Labour Local Body Committee (where many of the debates within the party were held), and Sue Piper’s complaint to the Labour Party against Bob Harvey, then party president, because of his attacks on the Labour councillors.
The fourth part of the papers has Wellington City local body election results between 1962 and 2001 and the fifth part covers the visit by Sue Piper and a Wellington delegation to Xiamen, a sister city in the People’s Republic of China in 2001.Quantity (Linear Metres)0.67AccrualsNone expectedMediumFileSystem of ArrangementSue has divided her files into five parts, as detailed in the series descriptionCollection TypeCommunity archives
