It had previously been known as The Brooklyn District Municipal Electors Association, which was operating under that name by 1916 and originally established in 1908 as the Brooklyn Municipal Electors Association.
The Brooklyn Municipal Electors Association was established in 1908 at a ratepayers meeting, by 1916 it not only was referred to by the Association's earlier name but also as The Brooklyn District Municipal Electors Association. In the 1950s the name changed to the Brooklyn Progressive Association.
The Association was incorporated on the 22 March 1972 as the Brooklyn Progressive Association Incorporated. It changed its name in 2001 to the Brooklyn Residents Association Incorporated and essentially carried on the same functions. In 2018 the Association changed its name to Greater Brooklyn Residents Association Incorporated.
The purpose of the Greater Brooklyn Residents Association as of 2025, as expressed on the CAB Community Directory website, is to be an expanded local residents association promoting and advocating for local issues for Brooklyn, Vogeltown, Mornington and Kingston residents. Issues of importance are:
- changes to the bus stops and pedestrian crossings in Brooklyn and Kingston
- traffic safety issues in and around the Kingston shops and Brooklyn intersection
- landfill precinct - three landfills in south Wellington
- current operation and ongoing development and community preparedness in event of emergency/disaster
- coordinate community feedback and public submissions on various council plans & projects, annual District Plan consultations, Long Term Plan consultations
- hold "meet the candidates" sessions for both the Local Body & General Elections
