A working group was formed, and one year later the Island Bay Community Resource Centre opened officially at 163 The Parade.

The Island Bay Community Resource Centre Inc changed their name to Island Bay Community Centre Inc in 2001.
The centre was used for activities including community lunches, children’s and adults' craft groups, scrabble sessions and exercise groups held on a weekly basis.
The centre moved to bigger, better premises, and on 2 October 1992 the centre was re-opened at 137 The Parade, with a community hall added in March 2003.
Following the dissolution of the Society, Wellington City Council took over the running of the premises and the Society's records were transferred to the Southern Bays Historical Society.
