TypeAgencyDate Range1996-DescriptionThe first meeting of Waterfront Watch took place in September 1995. Its first public meeting was held in March 1996, to organise a petition opposing plans for a wall of new buildings along the waterfront and calling for a halt to Lambton Harbour Management's development plans. In April that year it became an incorporated society and the first AGM was held. After campaigning against a succession of development proposals for the waterfront, Waterfront Watch launched a major campaign against Wellington City Council's District Plan Variation 17, introduced in October 1999 and in April the following year the Variation was withdrawn. It then campaigned against moving the Wellington Free Ambulance building. From July 1996, Waterfront Watch was also part of the various consultation groups established by the Council, including the Community Consultative Committee, the Community Advisory Group and the Waterfront Leadership Group. The organisation continues to exist and to lobby and raise awareness on waterfront development.
