The first gas was manufactured in Wellington in 1871 and the streets were lit for the first time on April 22 of that year. The company continued to operate under that name until 1980, when it became a subsidiary of Welgas Holdings Ltd.
Wellington Gas Co Limited was incorporated in 1969, and was reregistered in 1996, then removed from the Companies register the following year in 1997. Welgas Holdings Ltd was incorporated in 1978 as a private company and changed it's name to Enerco New Zealand Limited in 1992, reregistered in 1996 and changed it's name to Qest New Zealand Limited in 1998 and was removed from the Companies register the following year in 1999.
The Wellington Gas Company provided a number of products and services from their Courtenay Place and Miramar Avenue locations including: coke, gas cooker oven regulators, pumice coppers, gas heated products, fire bricks and Restar Ltd products.
The Wellington Gas Works in Miramar was constructed during 1911 to 1912, the works were located on the corner of Miramar Avenue and Southampton Road. Tram lines were laid between Miramar Wharf and the Gas Works through the Miramar cutting and used by the Wellington Gas Company with locomotives in operation transporting coal from the wharf.
