The trust was originally set up to manage and operate the Maritime Museum, Capital Discovery Place, Colonial Cottage Museum, the City Art Gallery and any other assets acquired or administered by the Trust.
In 2010 the trust added Carter Observatory to their facilities.
From 2016 the trust has traded as Experience Wellington.
The Wellington Museums Trust is a council-controlled organisation which independently manages a number of cultural or heritage facilities in Wellington on behalf of the Council.
It also acquires museum collections, sets up exhibition programmes and educational policies for Trust facilities, ensures the facilities compliment those provided by Te Papa, the Museum of NZ and co-operates with related facilities in the Wellington region.
As of 2024 Experience Wellington operates six visitor experiences for the Council:

Space Place at Carter Observatory
City Gallery Wellington
Nairn Street Cottage
Wellington Museum and
Cable Car Museum.
