It is divided into different areas for Protestant, Catholic and Jewish burials and includes a lawn cemetery and crematorium. Cremation began at the Karori Cemetery Crematorium in 1909. This was the first crematorium in New Zealand. The original one, coke-fuelled furnace was supplemented by a gas-fuelled furnace in 1945. The small chapel and crematorium was designed by John Sydney Swan and built in 1909. The Karori facilities were used by other regions of New Zealand during the period up to about the 1930s. The cemetery was the responsibility of the Administration and Finance Division of WCC until 1976, when it was transferred to the Parks Department.
