The company took over operations of the city's trolley buses and "Big Red" bus fleet from the Transport Department. In 1992, the company was transferred to Capital Holdings Ltd, also owned by Wellington City Council. In an agreement dated 9 October, 1992, Capital Holdings sold Wellington City Transport Ltd to Stagecoach Holdings Plc.
