TypeAgencyDate Range1788-July 1843DescriptionGeorge Hunter was the highest polling candidate amongst those elected in Wellington's first municipal election and so became, in 1842, the first Mayor of Wellington. He was born in 1788 in Banffshire and came to New Zealand from Glasgow in the Duke of Roxburgh in 1840, with his wife, four sons and six daughters. He entered into business with Kenneth Bethune as a general merchant. Hunter was also a member of the Council of Colonists that had been established by the first settlers under the New Zealand Company. He was well respected in the community, held in high esteem for his kindness, intelligence and probity. He died suddenly in July 1843 at the age of 55.
