Archives Identifier00757Date Range1923-1991DescriptionThis series consists of maps and plans compiled by the Design Branch of the Wellington City Council. This series of plans that was transferred to City Archives in 2002 by the Alexander Turnbull Library (ATL). The ATL acquired these plans sometime between 1975-1991, prior to the opening of the City Archives.

Includes items created by the Design Branch, but also includes items from other agencies, including the City Engineer’s Office and the Ministry of Works. Subjects include Wellington City Electric Tramway, Wellington Urban Motorway, Mount Victoria Tunnel, Access route plans to and from the Eastern and Western suburbs, Evans Bay Power Station, Wellington City parking and traffic surveys, roading schemes, street improvement and extension plans, Rongotai Airport, pedestrian censuses, emergency shelters and more.MediumPlanSystem of ArrangementThe order on transfer to ATL is not known, but is assumed to be in the original plan sequences the plans came from. On transfer to ATL the plans were rearranged based on suburb or subject, with some older plans transferring to their map collection. These groups have been maintained. A small number of plans were grouped together, but context was lost during digitisation, however the items have been left in their original folder to retain that context.Collection TypeWellington City Council
