Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00758Date Range1995-2020DescriptionThis is a series of documents pulled from the Wellington City Council Service request management system that shows evidence of cut and fill information. These are linked from the cut and fill map that is external facing.
Project description supplied by City Resilience & Sustainability:
Large scale earthworks have been carried out in Wellington for subdivision purposes over many years. The location of historic earthworks, specifically the location of areas of ‘cut’ and ‘fill’ is important to share with the public to enable visibility of where records suggest the land may have been modified.
A significant amount of historic cut and fill earthworks plans were available to the public through WCC archives but were not yet visible on the WCC mapping platform. The purpose of the project was to update the WCC GIS (mapping) system with the location of historic cut and fill plans and then link the locations to the original subdivision plans in Archives Online.
The WCC Resilience team liaised with the WCC Archives team to get the historic plans scanned. Once scanned, the electronic plans were referenced into GIS and the cut and fill boundaries captured. The cut and fill boundaries were added to the existing GIS database which was made available to the public via an ArcGIS webmap accessed here
The earthworks cut and fill map tool contains information dating back to the early 1900’s and is continually being updated with new information from modern subdivision work. This project focussed on subdivision plans from 1950 to 1980 which coincides with when a large amount of subdivision was carried out in Wellington.
