Situated almost opposite Tonks Grove, Arthur Street comes off Cuba Street.
Arthur Street was named after the son of William Tonks, Arthur Tonks. The family also had another street named after them, Tonks Grove. Arthur was instrumental in forming the early contours of the city, carrying out the first important city reclamation of 13 acres, in 1886, extending from Panama Street to Waring Taylor Street.
The Boys' Institute was built at 30 Arthur Street to support the wellbeing of working-class boys. Te Aro was, at the time of building in 1906, the home of the city's working class.
