Barker Street is a cul-de-sac off Cambridge Terrace. It was formed in 1875, as part of a subdivision of Town Acres 265 and 266 carried out for John Pattinson.
Barker Street is situated in a wider area that has been occupied for several centuries, first by Māori, including Ngāi-Tara and Te Āti Awa and then also by European immigrants from c.1840 onwards. The central Wellington area was surveyed and subdivided up by William Mein Smith into a number of town acre sections.
Initially a private way, it was taken over by the Wellington City Council under the Wellington City Streets Act 1905. This meant it became an public street and the maintenance of it became the responsibility of the Council from this date onwards.
