Barnett Street is situated off Cable Street alongside the Te Papa museum.
Named after Captain Barnett whose ship was the Cutter, Lambton, which entered Port Nicholson in 1826. This was one of the 3 streets where the proposal to name them after navigators was raised and accepted by the Wellington Harbour Board in 1920. Captain Barnett's name was put forward as he had made a rough map of the harbour in 1826, on his approach to it.
