Cornhill Street

Named after a London thoroughfare, Cornhill Street is a small street that runs off Bond Street in Te Aro.

It originally connected to Manners Street, but has subsequently been cut off due to building works, now making it 'no exit'. However, Cornhill Street somewhat retains its purpose as a thoroughfare by connecting to part of a walkway which provides pedestrian access to Lower Cuba Street. 

The former Bethune and Hunter's (wine merchants) building was located on the corner of Cornhill and Bond Streets. This was the oldest surviving business premises in Wellington until it was demolished by the City Council in 1958 for the construction of the Lombard Street Car Park. 

Cornhill Street was home to The Dorian Society, which was established in 1962 as the first exclusively gay venue in Wellington.
