Mercer Street connects Willis Street to Victoria Street between Chews Lane and Bond Street. It initially continued through Te Ngākau Civic Square, crossing Cuba Street and ending at Jervois Quay. The land was reclaimed by the Council in the Mid-1880s.
Mercer Street contained the first public library in Wellington (which can be seen allocated on the Thomas Ward Map) and sat on the site of the Civic Administration Building CAB, (which was demolished in February 2025).
Mercer Street is named after Mary Anne Duthie (nee Mercer, born 3rd December 1840, died 8th October 1911). Mary Anne was married to John Duthie who was Mayor of Wellington 1889-1890.
