Molesworth Street appears on the 1840 plan by W M Smith, Surveyor General: Plan of the town of Wellington.
Named after Sir William Molesworth, a director of the New Zealand Company. His brother, Francis Alexander Molesworth, emigrated to New Zealand in 1840, and was a principal of the firm of Hopper, Petre and Molesworth.
