Vivian Street gets its name from Lord Charles Vivian, who was a British MP and a director of the New Zealand Company.
When the street was surveyed in 1841, it was split in two parts: The section between The Terrace and Cuba Street was named Ingestre Street and the section between Cuba Street and Cambridge Terrace was named Vivian Street. Council took over the street in 1911.
Ingestre Street was merged into Vivian Street c. 1915, but there remains another Ingestre Street near Mornington Road in Brooklyn, also named after Viscount Ingestre.
In 2008 as a result of the Inner City Bypass splitting the street into two parts, the top end of Vivian Street (between Willis Street and The Terrace) had its name changed to become an extension to the existing part of Buller Street.
