Monde Marie coffee bar photographs and ephemera
Descriptive Data
Archives IdentifierBO001Date Range1958-1970DescriptionThis series consists of photographs and ephemera relating to the Monde Marie coffee bar that once stood in Roxburgh Street, Wellington. The popular coffee house was opened by Mary Seddon, granddaughter of Richard Seddon, in 1958. It became a centre of folk-music in Wellington.
Many of the photographs contained in this series are of musicians who visited or played at the Monde Marie. Other items include artwork, building-related documents, the lyrics to an original song dedicated to the establishment and materials created for the Monde Marie Reunion in 2010.
Donation records state that it is thought many of the photographs were taken by Mary Seddon herself, but it is not possible to verify which of the photographs fall into this category so a creator has not been attributed unless specified.MediumPhotograph - printSystem of ArrangementMaterials were donated with a system of arrangement in the form of grouping subjects with a number (signifying the subject) and Roman numeral (signifying the item's place within the order). This order has been maintained and the subject numbers preserved in the description field of the items. A new record ID has been given to items. In addition, some photographs were held separately in a folder indicating they were to be digitised - this distinction has also been maintained.
These subject numbers could have been given at the time the 2010 Monde Marie Reunion materials were created.
Subject numbers have been noted in the description and all items have been given reference IDs in the order they were found.External LinksThe Monde - Coffee and Counterculture, RNZ SpectrumMonde Marie (Wellington, N.Z.), National LibraryWellington's Folk Coffee Bars, Audio CultureCollection TypeCommunity archives
