Index records for the construction of government built buildings
Descriptive Data
Archives IdentifierCE001Date Range1930s-1990sDescriptionThis series consists of index records for government built buildings where plans and / or specifications were never lodged with the Wellington City Council or predecessors, either through the building permit process or as a courtesy. In the period leading up to the introduction of the Building Act 1991, the various agents who constructed buildings on behalf of the Crown were not bound by legislation to obtain a building permit/consent.
The bulk of index records relate to state housing, but there are also records for railway housing, school buildings and departmental buildings.
Each index record generally provides the address and date of construction for the building, as well as a description of the work that was carried out.
For state houses the house design number is also recorded - this can be used to search and obtain the original plans, from either Archives New Zealand or Kāinga Ora. Links to these organisations are provided in the External Links field. Similarly where plans for a building have been found at another institution, a link has been provided to that institution.
Please note that in some cases a building referenced may have been demolished or relocated. Where possible this is noted in the description for that item.
System of ArrangementItems in this series have had a numbering sequence imposed by City Archives - this is to ensure each index record has a unique reference number. The numbering is just based on the order records are added to Archives Online.External LinksArchives New Zealand research guidance - state house plansKāinga Ora - our archivesCollection TypeCommunity archives
