TypeAgencyDate Range2017-2023DescriptionBuild Wellington was established in 2017 following the decision to bring the urban development Council Controlled Organisation (City Shaper), which had largely been focused on the delivery of the waterfront, back into Council to get greater alignment of investment with Council priorities. It was positioned within the City Planning directorate alongside key functions such as City Design and Place Planning, Transport and Infrastructure, Resilience and Sustainability and regulatory planning functions, in order to assist in the delivery of the city vision.
Build Wellington delivers strategic projects and programmes which fall outside Council’s service provider role (i.e. the expenditure on the ongoing maintenance of existing infrastructure) and include one-off or significant projects that Council undertakes to facilitate growth in the city and support the needs of the community.
The role of Build Wellington is to support the growth of Wellington through strategic investment.
Build Wellington focuses on bridging the gap between Council and the market. This is achieved through
partnership with the private sector to harness its abilities, rather than compete against it. There is a range of ways that Build Wellington will interact with the broader development sector and interact on specific projects.
Build Wellington was split in 2023 into City Networks - Build Wellington and Housing development - Build Wellington.
