Archives IdentifierOS030Date Range1920-1982DescriptionThe Johnsonville Methodist Church was once one of the oldest Wellington church parishes outside of the central city area. Established in 1842, for generations the church, church hall, and its associated church graveyard were a significant feature of Johnsonville Road, the main street running through the suburb. The church hall came to be used as a community centre for the area and was used by Plunket & playcentre groups, scouts, the Boy's Brigade, the Women's Institute and many other local institutions. This collection was donated by the Church and by Johnsonville resident and historian Robert J Meyer. It consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and ephemera related to the church. The church buildings have been used by a variety of community organisations, the curated collection of correspondence summarises this. This is an important collection as it highlights how volunteers helped build the church, and how several community organisations benefited from the hall buildings.
