Archives IdentifierOS031Date Range1863-1966DescriptionThe first Anglican Church was built on the Hawtrey Site in Johnsonville. The site, which consisted of 20 acres, was so named as it was given by John and Stephen Hawtrey who still resided in England. The first church built on the site was burnt down in a bush fire in 1855. This church was replaced by another which was also burnt down by flakes of burning timber falling on the shingled roof in 1860. The next church was built and was ready in 1864, but this also had its turn to be burn down by a gorse fire lit by boys. After this a church was built in 1883.
The present church was erected in 1921, and the stone was laid by Thomas Henry who was then Bishop of Wellington. This collection consists of two folders, the items in these folders provide the brief history of how the existing Anglican Church was built after being repeatedly damaged by fires. The burial register lists the name of individuals and families buried.
This collection consists of records of the St John Anglican Church, and records collected by the Church which includes varying record types. Most of the record in this collection are enclosed in two folders as below:
