Archives IdentifierOS032Date Range1969-1972DescriptionThis collection consists of St Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in Johnsonville. These records were collected by the Parish and Robert J Meyer, a local historian, one of the Onslow Historical Society founding members, and a member of the Johnsonville Parish council. The church was opened on Sunday, 19 May 1895, by Archbishop Redwood. This church, along with one built at Ohariu valley was part of the extensive parish based in Lower Hutt. Under the leadership of Dean J. Lane, who was Parish Priest from 1886 to 1924, the priests travelled far and wide to serve areas centered around Johnsonville. On 1 February 1922, Reverend Father Michael Griggin was appointed first Parish Priest of the Johnsonville Parish, which included Pauatahanui in the north and Ngaio in the south. Due to the increasing population in Johnsonville and tremendous support from the priest and parishioners, the Presbytery, Convent School and the New Convent for the Sisters of St Brigit were built in 1931 [Source: newspaper clippings folder, article published on Kapi-mana news, 26 September 1972].
The collection consists of eight folders containing meeting agendas and minutes of the Johnsonville Church. Those meeting records cover the progress of the Church and its involvement in various initiatives from 1969-1977 like youth movement, annual retreat, monthly devotions programme. These items were grouped into folders based on the content of the research and labelled accordingly by Onslow archivist.
