Archives IdentifierCM001Date RangeNovember 1934-2021DescriptionSouthern Stars is the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand. Southern Stars is published up to 4 times each year (since 1997). Prior to 1997, the amount of publications each year were not consistent and the volume numbering often covered a biennial period, with the publication numbers continuing over that period.
Until the Society received the Royal Charter in 1946, the Southern Stars were the Journals published under the name of New Zealand Astronomical Society.
Almost the entire collection of Southern Stars is held in the Astrophysics Data System. Refer to the attached pdf compiled by Glen Rowe describing how you can access copies of these journals. These have been saved as articles, not by publication.
Annual reports have been published in Southern Stars almost without exception, however during the 1990s the reports were published in stand-alone booklet form.
The annual reports list the society’s office-holders and provide a summary of Council’s activities for the reporting year. Reports by those leading the society’s sections are included.
From inception up to 1980 the society’s reporting period ended 30 September. A one-off 15-month report followed and thereafter the society’s financial year and annual reports have aligned with the calendar year.MediumVolumeSystem of ArrangementThese were originally published as periodical booklets, but these ones between 1934 and 2000 were bound into two to four volume books.
From 2001 they were published as A4 stapled booklets.
