Files contain correspondence, reports, lists, notes, official sealed documents and other documents. The department's functions included: financial control, purchasing, accounting, rating, stores control, rates remission and other rating issues, sinking fund commissioners, local community organisations and loans.

A large number of the files were kept as loose papers in filing cabinets, and in 1992 filed onto blue manilla folders as part of office clean up following the move from The Municipal Office BUilding to the newly built Civic Administration Building in late 1991.
